Hitachi ZX38U-5
The Hitachi 3.8 tonne excavator is our smallest machine; however, it still has no problem lifting large timber and branches. With a fixed rotating forestry grapple, we can grab trees upright, cut them off, and lift them straight into the chipper, eliminating manual labour in some cases. This way of getting jobs done is far more efficient, allowing us to do the job cheaper. Our Hitachi excavators are both equipped with a tow hitch mount in the blade, which we use to position our chippers into otherwise impossible places.
Hitachi 4.8 Excavator
A fantastic little machine that gets into smaller places but still has enough muscle to do a hell of a lot. This also has a rotating grapple which is great for manoeuvring branches around in smaller spaces and carrying them out to feed a chipper. We’ve put a tow hitch into the blade so we can get the chippers into spots that the truck won’t. This would be our most used machine, going to virtually every job.
Komatsu PC128 US
Our 12-tonne excavator has a forestry rotating grapple, which gives us the ability to lift large pieces of trees. Having a rotating grapple allows us to feed a chipper from any angle with precision. Using an excavator greatly reduces the number of men required on a job while simultaneously reducing risk to personnel.
Caterpillar 310 Excavator
Caterpillar 310 excavator. The newest addition is certainly getting a work out on these bigger jobs. With a rotating grapple that opens to almost 1500mm wide, there’s not much it can’t do. Putting logs onto trucks that weigh in excess of 4 ton is no problem, it is also handy to grab a standing tree and either tear it apart or simply lift it out once cut with a chainsaw. The rotating grapple allows us to spin the tree or branches around so they can be fed into the chipper.
